How Different Cabinet Door Styles on Your Furniture Make a Difference for Your Purchase and Design

While there are many practical doors for your furniture, some are more stylish than others and can better fit your design.

While there are many practical doors for your furniture, some are more stylish than others and can better fit your design. As shoppers, we tend to gravitate towards the style of a piece before considering practicality. However, it is also important to also consider function in your design so that you can use the furniture in your home comfortable throughout the year. If you are looking to purchase new cabinets or furniture for your home in the near future, consider these options to provide the functionality that you need and the style you want in your home design.

Full Recessed Doors

A full recessed door fits completely into the face frame of the cabinet, giving a flush look and complete finish to the front of the piece. While this popular style is often preferred for its clean and polished look, a high humidity environment will often affect the opening and closing of the door, as the wood expands and contracts with changes in temperature.

Half Overlay Doors

A half overlay door includes the back of the door cut out to fit into the frame of the piece, with the front edge laying on the face frame approximately 3/8” to cover any space between the door edge and the frame. This particular style fits into the frame, yet leaves a space so that the door can open and close easily while hiding the gap for a clean appearance.

Full Overlay Doors

A full overlay door is used not only on furniture, but in kitchen cabinet construction as well. This style consists of a door hinged to lay flat against the face frame rather than fitting into it. With room for mis-cuts in the frame and doors, this is easily the most forgiving door in the industry. However, the  ¾” thick door laying on the front face of the cabinet can often give the piece a heavy look and is not as refined as the others.
